Maintenance & Repair Process
Mechanical Seal
The Mechanical Seal maintenance and repair process at the John Crane Workshop is carried out through strictly controlled technical stages to ensure sealing integrity and operational reliability after refurbishment.
Each stage is organized into key process groups for easier monitoring while fully reflecting the actual technical workflow implemented by KLE engineers.

TECHNICAL PROCESS
STEP 01
DISASSEMBLY
KLE engineers carefully disassemble the complete mechanical seal assembly to support detailed inspection and refurbishment. The procedure follows the required technical sequence to prevent secondary damage to individual components.
STEP 02
ULTRASONIC WASHING
All components are cleaned using ultrasonic equipment and specialized cleaning solutions to remove oil residue, deposits, and contaminants from surfaces and narrow internal gaps that conventional methods cannot fully reach.
STEP 03
INSPECTION & REPORTING
After cleaning, each component is inspected and its actual condition is recorded, including seal faces, O-rings, springs, and other critical parts. The findings are compiled into a technical report for condition assessment and repair recommendations.
STEP 04
LAPPING FACE & SEAT
The sealing faces are reconditioned using specialized lapping equipment to restore the required flatness and surface finish, ensuring reliable sealing performance.
STEP 05
MEASURING LIGHTBAND
An optical flat and monochromatic light are used to inspect surface flatness through Lightband measurement. The results confirm machining accuracy and the final condition of the sealing faces.

STEP 06
SEAL ASSEMBLY
Qualified components are reassembled in a controlled clean environment. The assembly process ensures the required tolerances, installation dimensions, and concentric alignment in accordance with technical standards.
STEP 07
SEAL LEAK TEST
After assembly, the seal undergoes a static air-pressure leak test using specialized equipment. The results must remain within the allowable limits of API 682 before the seal proceeds to the next stage.

STEP 08
PACKING
The seal is packed under controlled conditions to protect it from impact and preserve the sealing surfaces during transportation. Each unit is delivered with the corresponding technical report.
